An experiential campus that leans into the role Artificial Intelligence will continue to play in our learning, labour and domestic lives through the design of an institution that treats technological systems and humans as an integrated ecosystem, housing researchers and facilities for the design, development and public exhibition of AI systems.

There are passive and active ways of learning. We wanted to create a platform in which the public can passively learn about ai technology by exhibiting the living conditions of the researchers. We felt that the demonstration of domestic living in a post-work era is the most suitable preliminary introduction to ai tech and automation as it is what people can relate to the most.

SITE PLAN //

This institution will house both the design and development systems of Ai systems as well as the housing the students and researchers, as a means to exhibit the coexistence of AI technological systems and humans as an ecosystem.

The researchers and students will learn to develop and understand the Ai systems which operate in a post work scenario. The institution will facilitate research labs, processing units, data centers and the testing and building of these systems. Furthermore, the participants will develop an understanding of the ethical aspects of an automated society, as well as learning to program and the uses.

The building itself will employ these systems through a network of transport systems, both collecting and distributing goods through the facility. The use of a package transport system as a clothesline, where from the laundry chute the researcher’s clothes are washed, dried along the clothesline and returned to their owner’s pods. We wanted to approach this display in a theatrical way since washing machines and dryers do exist in a conventional lifestyle, but we wanted to overplay it to really explore and demonstrate the opportunities in technology and display it almost comically as to lessen the tension between tech and the domestic.

The primary access of the institution is through vertical cores which houses a staircase which spirals a central elevator improving accessibility, as well as the primary structural support to provide the illusion of a floating building. There is also a network of catwalks hanging from our space frame system connecting elevated spaces within the building.

We have implemented a truss system into our institution through the means of a standardised grid which aligns and unifies different elements of the project.

We have employed a cross-ventilation system which draws fresh air through the facades and into the building. The air is expelled through the roof.

The building will also be accessible to the public, where they are able to observe these systems and how they are developed through a public lens. Allowing the public to formulate an understanding of these systems will bridge AND assist in the transition to a predominantly automated society. Furthermore, the public amphitheatre should act as a public forum for discussion and collaboration.

The truss system houses the building utilities such as the water management system, as well as the artificial ventilation system. The service cores allow these systems to connect the different levels of our institution, as well as providing the structural support. Through our system axonometric we provide an insight into how the building’s spaces share relationships with one another. Which parallels our intentions of nurturing the relationship between society and a new automated society.
